 Adoption of Surgical Interventions in Severe Corneal Ulcer Cases

The Corneal Ulcer Treatment Market is witnessing increasing reliance on surgical interventions for managing severe or treatment-resistant cases. While most corneal ulcers respond to topical antibiotics, antifungals, or antivirals, advanced cases often require surgical solutions to prevent vision loss and restore corneal integrity.

Therapeutic keratoplasty, including penetrating keratoplasty (PK) and lamellar keratoplasty, remains the most common surgical approach for non-healing ulcers or those with corneal perforation. These procedures involve replacing damaged corneal tissue with donor grafts, improving both vision and structural stability. For smaller perforations, tissue adhesives like cyanoacrylate glue are employed to temporarily seal defects until definitive surgery can be performed.

In recent years, amniotic membrane transplantation has emerged as a valuable technique for promoting epithelial healing and reducing inflammation. Corneal collagen cross-linking (CXL) is also gaining attention for its ability to strengthen the corneal stroma and halt the progression of melting ulcers.

The decision to opt for surgery depends on ulcer severity, pathogen type, and patient-specific factors such as immune status. Advances in surgical instruments, improved graft preservation techniques, and minimally invasive methods are enhancing outcomes while reducing recovery times.

Given the shortage of donor corneas in many countries, artificial corneas (keratoprostheses) are being explored as alternative solutions. As surgical innovations continue to evolve, their role in corneal ulcer management will expand, particularly in complex cases where medical therapy alone is insufficient.
